| For Tea 11 Feb to after Lunch 15 Feb | Lent Retreat | John Bell |
John, prior to ordination, worked in voluntary capacities in London and Amsterdam. His professional ministry began with a post in youth work in Glasgow. During a subsequent period of youth ministry under the aegis of the Iona Community, John and his colleague, Graham Maule, were drawn to concentrate on the areas of congregational song, liturgy and the sharing of scripture.
With his colleagues, John has produced collections of original songs, compilations of music from the World Church, and books of worship resources and sermons. John works throughout Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand for churches of all denominations. He is an occasional broadcaster on BBC radio and television and is currently convener of the working group producing a new hymn book for the Church of Scotland.
Unlike Mel Gibson in The Passion of the Christ, John Bell does not believe that Jesus was crucified primarily because he foreshadowed his death at the meal we call The Last Supper. His contention, rather, is that from the beginning of his life, there were specific aspects of his public ministry which, though pointing to heaven, created discomfort on earth. These themes will be the substance of reflection, meditation and prayer during this retreat.

| 13 Feb, 12 Mar, 16 Apr, 21 May | Launde Abbey Day Courses: Encountering Spiritual Companionship | The Warden |
This course, which is now in its fourth year, is designed to enable participants to explore both key elements of their faith and a variety of different Christian traditions of prayer and spirituality. It will allow people to ask the central question of how you relate life and faith to God, through prayer and reflection. Through exploring different traditions of prayer and spirituality, both an encounter with God and spiritual growth will be possible.
There will be time for:
• Prayer giving time to pray and to reflect on our journey of faith through a range of approaches;
• Reflection this has two dimensions: firstly, the personal reflection in relation to what has happened and is happening in the participants life, and faith in their prayer and relationship with God; secondly, the corporate reflection of how the Christian spiritual tradition can inform and help our understanding of the personal experience;
• Sharing faith sharing in the sense of sharing with another person something of our experience of prayer and reflection helps us to articulate our lived faith and so deepen our awareness of God in our lives. Done in a safe place this can help us to share our faith in more public places.
Each day will begin with morning coffee and finish with afternoon tea. Although it is possible to book each day separately it is strongly encouraged that participants attend all four days to get the most from the course.

| For Tea 26 May to after Lunch 30 May | Five Day Individually Guided Retreat | Gill Russell, Glenn Martin |
Gill Russell, a former Deputy Warden of Launde, has been leading retreats for many years and greatly values the Individually Guided Retreat as a way of relating prayer to the experience of daily life. Now retired and living in Leicester, she finds great reward in helping people towards a quality of life in which spirit, body and mind are equally valued and integrated.
Glenn Martin was ordained in 1986. He currently serves as a parish priest having been the Professional Development Officer for Chaplaincy and Spiritual Healthcare having worked most of his ordained ministry within Hospital Chaplaincy.
The desire for God, the desire to know the fullness of life that God offers and to accept at an even deeper level the call to follow Christ may lead us to make a retreat. Here we have a chance to become more aware of Gods love for us, more aware of the quality of our response, and the time to consider the next step in our discipleship. The call to take time out to attend such promptings may come at different points in our lives. An individually Guided Retreat can be a great help in reflecting on Gods action in our lives, considering our present situation and facing choices to do with the next stage of our journey.

| For Tea 21 Jul to after Lunch 25 Jul | Walking Holiday: A Journey of Exploration of God, of Self and the East Midlands | The Warden |
Tim Blewett has been the Warden of Launde Abbey since 2004. Prior to becoming Warden he was Canon Residentiary of St Asaph Cathedral with responsibility as Diocesan Officer for Ministry, Adviser for Continuing Ministerial Education and Diocesan Director of Ordinands. Between the two posts he was mobilised by the Army to serve as a military chaplain in Iraq from December 2003 to June 2004. He has also served as a parish priest.
The holiday will be a spiritual journey, involving prayer, meditation and worship. However, the main daytime activity, not surprisingly, will be walking. The East Midlands especially East Leicestershire and Rutland offers a host of walking opportunities. Although some of the walks may start and finish at Launde others will involve car journeys to the start / finish points. It is expected that car sharing between those coming on the holiday will be mutually agreed. Participants should be able to undertake walks of several hours duration without suffering from any ill effects and are advised to be equipped with suitable footwear and weather attire. During your stay there will also be time to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet of Launde itself and to join in the cycle of daily worship. There will be the opportunity to read and meditate in private and to enjoy conversation and fellowship in the evening.

Chaplain: Owen Vigeon has been a CARM Retreat Chaplain for the past ten years having retired from fulltime ministry in Cumbria and is Canon Emeritus of Blackburn Cathedral. He enjoys writing verse which he describes as light verse with serious intent. He plays the keyboard and flute and is also a singer and occasional writer of music. He is married and has three grandchildren. He now helps to keep a church in Coventry going!
Photography Tutor: Peter Boorman is a photographer specialising in landscapes and gardens, still life and architecture, who believes firmly that it is the creative part of making a photograph or any piece of visual art that is the most important, not the technology used to do it. This is his third photography retreat that he has tutored at Launde.
Creative Writing Tutor: Diana Walls enjoys creative writing and poetry, quiet gardens and prayer guiding. Diana taught literature with the Open University so values the practice of reading in small groups and sharing insights.
How can we experience and live in the moment when so much of life is hurrying on to what R.S. Thomas called a forgotten future? Not only pictures and writing will be enriched, but prayer may deepen if we see with more clarity and freshness. How good it would be to enjoy a space where we simply learn how to watch.
In the beautiful setting of Launde Abbey, we shall watch the way light falls on the park and the trees, and learn how to capture the scene in words and in pictures. Whether behind a camera or with a notebook, we shall learn the art of watching and receiving. Retreatants will be able to work in either medium, or explore both, if they wish. We shall explore how visual and written approaches complement one another. There will be time in the late afternoon and evening to share insights and creativity. If the invitation to clear a space and let more light in appeals, then please come and join us at Launde in August.
Diana Walls and Peter Boorman
| For Supper 18 Aug to after Breakfast 22 Aug | Working Holiday for the Fit and Healthy | The Launde Community |
The Working Holiday will involve working around the Abbey. Each day those participating will have the opportunity to join the daily round of worship in the beautiful Abbey chapel. The work, either in the Abbey or in the gardens, will be done under the direction of the Warden or other members of the Abbey staff. This will provide the opportunity for the group to have both great fun and fellowship within the context of prayer. There will also be time to relax in the company of the rest of the group in the evening. travels widely as a speaker on spirituality and as a retreat-leader. She has written several books about prayer in everyday life, including Heaven in Ordinary and Patterns not Padlocks. She has also compiled prayer-anthologies, including The Book of a Thousand Prayers, and written many books of reflections, including The Wine Danced, which explores ways in which Eucharistic themes can permeate everyday life and prayer. Her forthcoming book, Follow the Fool (due out in 2009), is about the wisdom of foolishness in Christianity and other contexts. She is married to an Anglican priest; lives in Southwell in Nottinghamshire, and has three grown up children.
This will be a silent retreat, with addresses that incorporate meditations, art and music. We shall explore aspects of the mystery of Jesus Transfiguration in the presence of Peter, James and John (Luke 9:2836) and ponder how this extraordinary moment may speak to us today. As we finish the retreat on the eve of All Saints Day, we shall also reflect on ways in which saints, both well-known and unsung, have reflected the glory of God in their lives.
