50th Anniversary Pilgrimage
Bishop of Leicester, the Rt Revd Tim Stevens, the Bishop of Peterborough, the Rt Revd Ian Cundy, and the Bishop of Brixworth, the Rt Revd Frank White.
On Sunday, 15 June 2008, the Bishop of Leicester, the Rt Revd Tim Stevens, with the Bishop of Peterborough, the Rt Revd Ian Cundy, led the celebratory Pilgrimage Service at Launde Abbey. Richard Atkinson, the Archdeacon of Leicester, and Christine Allsopp, the Archdeacon of Northampton, read the readings while Tim Blewett, the Warden of Launde led the prayers. The service was attended by more than 150 people from across the two dioceses and beyond.

The occasion marked the 50th Anniversary of Launde being used as a Retreat House following the giving of Launde Abbey by Cecil and Lillian Coleman to the Launde Abbey Trust. In the course of the last 50 years many tens of thousands of people have benefited from Launde Abbey — which is a place of prayer, peace, stillness and tranquillity. This wonderful resource for the Diocese of Leicester and beyond has been influential for many people in their spiritual development and growth as Launde is a place of renewal, mission and spirituality.

People travelled to Launde by many different forms of transport with some walking, others cycling — including the Rt Revd Frank White, Bishop of Brixworth — and others coming by car and even by bus. On arrival many enjoyed a picnic in the gardens prior to the service.

The service was followed by the opportunity for people to have afternoon tea and to wander around the beautiful gardens. There were many very positive comments about the gardens and especially about the amount of vegetables in the Victorian kitchen walled garden being grown to supply the Abbey’s guests for their meals.
